Privacy,in plain light.

Mote does not run a user account system and does not upload your personal data to our servers. Everything below either stays on your device or lives in your own iCloud private database.

§ 01

Location

To show the air quality index (AQI) for your current location, the app reads your device’s precise location after you grant permission. This data is used to:

  • Query the Google Air Quality API for real-time air quality at the current coordinates;
  • Reverse-geocode coordinates to a district / county-level place name (never down to a street or point of interest);
  • Center the map view and display air quality tiles around your location.

You can revoke location permission at any time under Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Mote. You can still use the app by adding cities manually.

§ 02

Microphone & Speech Recognition

The microphone button in the search bar uses the iOS Speech framework to convert your voice into text for city search. Recording starts only while you actively hold the microphone button and stops as soon as you release it or close the search field.

Speech recognition may be performed by Apple in the cloud — please also refer to the Apple Privacy Policy. The app itself never stores any audio recordings.

§ 03

Google Air Quality API

Air quality data and map tiles are provided by the Google Air Quality API. Each query sends the latitude and longitude of your currently selected location to Google’s servers. Please refer to the Google Privacy Policy. The API key used by the app is restricted to its iOS bundle identifier and cannot be used outside the app.

§ 04

iCloud Sync

The list of cities you add is stored in your own Apple ID’s private CloudKit database (container: iCloud.app.getmote.ios.Mote) and synced across devices signed into the same Apple ID. We have no access to anything stored in this database.

To remove this data, go to Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Mote, or simply uninstall the app.

§ 05

Performance & Crash Reporting · Sentry

To detect and fix crashes and performance issues, the app integrates Sentry. When a crash or exception occurs, Sentry collects anonymous diagnostic data such as:

  • Crash stack traces, error messages, and code paths;
  • Runtime environment such as device model, iOS version, and app version;
  • Performance metrics such as page load times and rendering frame rate.

This data is not associated with any user identity: the app does not send your Apple ID, email, name, unique device identifier, or precise location to Sentry, and does not set any user identifier that could be traced back to an individual. The data is used solely to diagnose and improve app quality.

§ 06

What We Do Not Collect

  • The app does not collect your name, email, phone number, or any other directly identifying personal information;
  • The app does not integrate any advertising SDKs and does not perform user profiling or targeted marketing analytics;
  • The app does not record your location history on our servers.
§ 07

Children's Privacy

The app is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe the app has collected such information unintentionally, please contact us at the email below.

§ 08

Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and notify you in-app where appropriate.
